Have you ever been told to complete a task that has multiple steps? For example, when we walk in the house from being outside on a rainy day I tell the kids “take off your coats, shoes, and socks; put them where they belong and then you can start doing whatever is next (on their agenda).” Usually after taking shoes off the steps in the task get lost. I mean, we are taking about toddlers here. It’s annoying to me as a parent because I want them to just focus on it and complete whatever I need from them. So, usually before telling them this task, I have them look at me while I’m talking to ensure more focus. I also have them repeat the steps out loud to me. I’ve noticed the more they stay engaged, the easier it is for them to focus.
Now, this wouldn’t be my blog if I didn’t take that scenario to another level.
How many times have we been told to complete a task by our Heavenly Father, yet choose to only do some or most of the steps? Somewhere in the midst, a few things got left out. Sometimes those things could have even been done unintentionally because we lost focus of the original plan. There are also times we allow our thoughts to be more important than God’s task.
If you’re a parent or in some sort of leadership role you can totally understand how frustrating this is. I find myself asking the kids, “why can’t you just do it the way I asked you to do it”? Understanding the importance of completing this task to a toddler is beyond difficult, I usually would end up answering to many questions for “why”. In moments like that I just explain that mommy can see what you can’t understand yet, so I just need it done that way.
Do you think our Heavenly Father has the same frustrations? I sometimes imagine Him looking at me with His hands crossed and a confused look on His face wanting to ask…. what in MY world are you doing child? I asked you to do it this way. I tend to lose focus a lot. Not purposefully, but it happens and I’m aware of it.
Name a distraction and I can possibly add another, they surround us daily. The only way I’ve been able to work on my focus, is to stay focused on Christ. Focusing on His words in the bible, focusing through prayer, and acknowledging my distractions. Once I’ve done all three I’m usually able to get back on task.
Prayer:
We are so thankful for your Grace and patience with us. Distractions surround us daily, we want to be more focused so that we can complete whatever task you need done. If we stray, pull us back in. In Jesus name. Amen.
