Does anyone remember the song that went like this “give that old time religion, give me that old time religion.”
So I had a thought, what if that old time religion wasn’t really religion, but old time faith instead? Let me explain, in today’s society we have come to expect the things we want “right now.” Get online (right now), you want coffee (right now), you want pizza (right now), when we are kids… we want to be adults (right now). Think of other things you might want right now. When this song was made in 1873 things were totally different. Way different to be exact, no instant coffee, no instant pizza, not really anything instant. To me, I would think their faith in God would be amazingly strong! I picture them praying for rain to water their harvest, asking for clouds to give them shade on a hot day, asking for strength to get them through days all they had to eat was bread. I would even go as far to imagine living back then, if you didn’t have faith, you couldn’t survive.
So when they asked for old time religion, they would be referring to the type of religion Paul had. Total faith. Religion today has an odd way of hurting people, even just the word hurts some. It’s because we as humans have hurt the word. Not because religion in itself has failed us. We’ve possibly forgotten in order to have religion we need faith.
So I sing….. Give me that old time faith, give me that old time faith!!! How about you?
Prayer:
We know how important religion is, but we know without faith in YOU religion is obsolete. We want to remember daily to trust in you and believe our lives are complete when we allow you to be first. In Jesus name. -Amen.
