Have you ever stepped out on faith knowing God was guiding you and as soon as you do that, adversity comes your way? I had a similar thing happen today (and yes it’s happened before as well). Today was different because the adversity came from an area that felt like a sucker punch to the side and it takes your breath. In other words, it was unexpected.
I feel like I’m getting better at recognizing when these things happen, so I knew I had two options. 1) fight it naturally or 2) fight it spiritually.
I can not sit here and say the journey of choosing to fight spiritually has been the easiest thing I’ve ever done. Its actually been more difficult than I imagined it to be. If you’ve read my book/ blogs you know that I struggled with anger issues, so therefore you can put the conclusion as to how I tried to defeat issues into your imagination. If you haven’t I can give you a hint…. it was my mouth! I could argue a stone in the ground and make it think it was a grain of sand before Christ was invited into my heart. The journey of learning when and how to open my mouth has been a bit difficult, but I’m getting better at it with the Holy Spirits guidance.
Back to my story. In this specific situation, I recognized it was a spiritual battle and the attack was meant to throw me off guard so that I would get caught up in that instead of focusing on a solution. I decided to remove myself from the physical situation and begin now in worship. It was there that I was trying to fight this within my mind, and I thought I was doing good until I got approached by someone asking what was wrong (because they could tell something was bothering me.) Long story short, it wasn’t until speaking the issue out that I actually gained my peace back. I heard Pastor Steven’s message about the importance of speaking against a spiritual attack instead of fighting it in your mind, and it made me remember just how important it really is to do just that. First though, (for myself) I needed to be in a place of worship before bolting out what was wrong because it was there that I was able to begin the healing of hurt process that was needing to take place. Find what works for you personally, but I do want to encourage you to find it.
After getting “sucker punched” it’s important to catch your breath and ask for guidance! If you try to fight while still out of breath, you aren’t going to be able to fully focus and in the end, run the risk of losing the fight. In boxing (fighting sport) after they’ve taken a hard hit, they usually have to take a step back and regroup. Are we able to do the same spiritually?
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12 NKJV
